2023 season begins!

Hello All! Cooler is launched and floating. This will be the final chapter on Run Dry impeller test on the Crusaders. After some strange things, I did replace the run dry impellers with standard neoprene type. Engines primed like normal, run dry had issues with that. Engines ran at normal temp and were constant on temp, run dry always ran about 10 degress hotter and would constantly go up and down in 10 degree swings. The run dry impellers did look new when we removed them, so durability is good. For my money, standard impellers offer better comfort. My 20 mile cruise across Green Bay was in 65F temps and flat water. Great cruise and Cooler ran like a champ! In slip now, getting final set up for a great season! First season in a while when I did not have to worry about submerged ice chunks, YIPPEE! er

Had the same problem with run dry impellers on my Volvo 8.1s. Would not prime on initial launch.
Changed to neoprene and no problems
since.

They have always intrigued me for 20+ years however when I checked things out through the internet, there were so many negative comments I never decided to try them out. Not sure why they are still around since they seem to be problematic.

I did talk with Globe, the manufacturer. They recommend to remove impellers during seasonal lay up. The impellers would have a tendancy to set over long periods of no spin. They do pump a lot more water than neoprene, but I think that is why I had the temp variances. A friend of mine has them in his go fast boat, and really likes 'em. He does remove each end of season, and does not have that initial prime problem. He is a full throttle guy, so maybe they are better for that type of operator. They are more pliable, so you would think they sould have no problem with initial prime. Must be some type of back pressure issue. Oh well, different strokes for different folks! er

Finally saw the first published price for non-ethanol gas at a local marina. $5.01 USD a gallon. Hope my marina maintains the same pricing philosophy as previous years. They are generally about .80 a gallon less. Will check that out later today if I head up to do some pressure washing. While it is not an affordability issue, it still grinds me to think $5.00 a mile. Bothers me less with a c-tail in my system. ( Just 1 though ) I do not cruise if impaired. er
