20 pt light

Post by sbb2112 »

This may be dumb question. There is a 20pt light wire in the diagram for my 82' monterey. I am rewiring the lights to LED's and am wondering what the 20 pt term means. I assume this is a masthead light.

Could you post the schematic, maybe it will trigger something.....maybe port side, most wires were numbered at both ends.
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

Normally the 20pt would refer to a 20 position terminal block.

20 points (pts) is equal to 225 degrees, which is the requirement for a masthead light (if that's required on your boat). If you have a masthead light, then you also should have a corresponding stern light that only shows 135 degrees to the stern (or 12 points)

There are 32 points to a circle, and correspond with the 32 points on your compass (N, NNE, NE, ENE, E, ESE, SE, SSE, S, SSW, SW, WSW, W, WNW, NW, NNW) and the halfway points in between those.

That was the info I was looking for. I have a 135 stern light and a 225 masthead and an anchor light. Just looking at the wiring diagram, all it says is 20pt. Everything works as it should, just curious what that meant. There was about 40 years of bad decisions on the wiring that required a deep dive into. All is fine now. I removed 30lbs. of useless and or dangerous wiring.

Wow! That is a lot of extra wiring. Kinda scary really, makes you wonder what someone was trying to accomplish. Hope they at least used the correct connectors and not just a bunch of wire nuts. SBB, where in Michigan are you? 8-) er

Yes, the wiring was a complete mess along with all the plumbing. It appeared that if something quit working, the fix was to run a new wire. There were at least 5 sets of wires for the stereo and speakers. I found a section of water line that, in the span of 18" had, pex, pvc, compression, and a rubber hose with hose clamps. They all leaked. I should have took a photo of the wire ball I found when I removed the panel cover. The saving grace was a new engine and rebuilt lower unit. Came with dyno sheets. The boat will live in Bay City in 24' Lansing is home.
