carver 27 santego at low speed

Post by confused_bloke »

hi, the title really says it all, how does a carver 27 santego handle at low speeds? (in case there are hull variations for this model, its advertised as a full displacement hull by the broker)
we intend on using it on the thames, where the speed limit is 8 kts
we just need to know if its going to drift across the top of the river like the fjord 24 we had previously, or whether it will hold a straight line
any help would be greatly appreciated

Any boat will wander at low speeds. Reaction to current and wind. Straight line is almost an unrealistic expectation, especially if you have a single engine. Good luck! Watch out for London Bridge falling down! 8-) er

it has twin engines, would that help to mitigate wandering, even if its only minute?

Twin engine vs single makes a huge difference when it comes to wandering. No comparison, a twin is what I would call stable in comparison to a single. Been there done that.

I seriously doubt that boat has a full displacement hull, it will have a relatively flat aft ( low deadrise ) planing type.

Does it have the outdrives ( i/o) or full inboard ( prop shafts ) ?
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

Agree with bud37 100%. Here is a description of full displacement commonly found on trawlers.

That is a planning hull, not a displacement hull. It should have twin alpha1 out drives that are not counter rotating, as such it will tend to want to pull starboard at low speeds. If you experience this, adjust your starboard outdrive to angle very slightly to port when the wheel is "straight" and it should track pretty well.
If it happens to have duo prop volvo drives disregard above.
