Stairs carpet - GONE!

Post by KyleR »

We finally got around to removing the carpet from the stairs leading from outside to the salon. It had gotten pretty bad in spite of our attempts to clean it - so out it came!

Underneath was just plywood, coated in carpet glue so I decided to start from scratch and rebuild the treads and try to dress up the risers. We'll, here's what we ended up with!

I used a 3/4" stain grade pine and applied five coats of Minwax Polyshades. I had to use 2 different colors and layered them to get the color we wanted.

For the risers we used a grasscloth wallpaper from Lowes and just sanded the risers smooth before applying.

Overall, it turned out very nice. Now on to ripping out ALL of the carpet in the salon!!!

Looks nice.

One thing I have always paid attention to is wet bare feet or even wet deck shoes slipping on smooth surfaces especially stair treads especially when in a hurry.

There is some nice clear non skid stick on tape on the market that works real well, I used it on bridge ladders for years with success, virtually invisible and stops/ reduces any wet sliding.

Good luck with the ongoing project.
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

My wife has plans to make some sisal "pads" that we will then affix to the treads to prevent slip. ;-)

Nice job

What are you thinking of using for the salon floor?

We are going to put down LVP. Hope to post some pics in a different thread in a week or two. I decided to completely remake all of our hatches since they were all too small once the carpet was out. Plus, I split some of the larger hatches into smaller ones to make them more manageable. :-D. I already put LVP in both berths and the galley - the salon is the final piece!

Hey Kyle. I was admiring your LVP job on the salon and galley floors. I am looking to do the same in my 350 ACMY. I also have existing wood color like yours....I like the contrasting colors. I have a question. How is the flooring holding up with the temp extremes....I assume you pull your boat in the winter. Mine undergoes temp swings from 110 degrees in the summer to 0 and below in the winter, not to mention the humidity swings! The flooring guy I talked to today thought that might be problematic. Could you tell me what you think? I thank you in advance.
