Cockpit is something one usually refers in an airplane or race car cockpit where the pilot controls the aircraft/car however when it comes to boats there seems to be quiet different. If one googles boat cockpit it shows helm stations which seems to be wrong?
Carver and most other manufactures sell cockpit motor yachts which refer to a rear extension of the boat or at least this is something I have just assumed over the years. I did a little research and found cockpit was in fact a sunken area in the aft for crew members.
Just thought this was interesting since the word cockpit on a boat has always been a little confusing for me as to why? Now I know.

Or do I know?

Re: Understanding The Word Cockpit In A Boat
The second syllable 'pit' supports the sunken area definition. I'm not going to explore the meaning of the first syllable.
