Twin pleasurecraft 302 water pump orientation
I cant find an answer to this dilemma. A friend removed port side water pump, I’m replacing, not marked up or down, a sherwood G21 pump. Put it in the same as the starboard engine, engine rotation is left for port and right for starboard. Did I put it in opposite? Also, the impeller roasted. Thru hull is open. There was water flowing in the sea strainer at first..either i put it in backward, it’s defective or there was an air leak, what else? Mostly wondering if it should be opposite of the other engine, but it didnt seem to want to fit that direction.

Should be easy to tell which is the inlet and which is the outlet on the pump, then looking at the pulley and determining which direction it turns should tell you how to orient the pump housing.

Is the other pump in the pic the original from the side ? Maybe this can help a bit...

FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

It SHOULD BE easy, but I am questioning my ability to determine. Especially since melting the impeller.

Sorry I meant to say, was the other pump in the pics the old one from the same side ? Yup ya melted that baby good !!!
Anyway, once you get this sorted out, remember to assemble the new impeller with dish soap to lube it for start up then you can see the bubbles in the exhaust discharge as well.
Fyi , even a small split in the suction side hose under the clamp can short circuit a pump ( keep it from pumping) and if you keep trying the impeller will be ruined to the point of not pumping even if the pump is installed correctly.
Good practice may be to cut a small amount off the end of the hose to create a fresh joint if you have enough slack, inspect the hose there.

From the pros over at boatdiesel.com, they say it doesn't matter what orientation you have the impeller blades because as soon as you start the engine they will flip to the correct orientation. And those are some pretty respected guys from a mechanical perspective. That looks more like it was starved for water to me. Make sure you check your thru-hull intake and sea strainer for blockages.

Ya it doesn't matter which way the fins are set when installing, they will flip to the correct direction once the engine spins. Lubricate the impeller during assembly and you'll be fine. I agree, it was starved of water, not because of the direction the fins were set into the pump.
Is one engine a counter-rotator? If so, does that pump mount differently or set up differently for counter-rotation? If so, this matters and which port the intake hose goes to makes a difference.
