Voyager 530 2005 Air Conditioning Fix or upgrade

Postby hansfuller » July 14th, 2024, 7:26 pm

I rarely use my Air conditioner on my yacht but am looking at getting it working again.
As the boat is almost 20 years old now would it make more sense jut to replace it, or is there a an upgrade aviable.
There are 3 units now but I would only do the main stateroom and salon.
Currently the unit runs but the breaker trips as soon as the compressor start ups.
Any pointers would be appreciated.

You might want to check out exactly which make/model you have, because that could make a difference. Some have better reputations than others. Also would tell if they are still R-22 units or they were the R-410 models.

If it's not something simple like a start or run capacitor then it might make more sense to just replace the unit.

Has the boat always been in the BC area? That might mean the units have had much less run time than those models that are run in the Gulf or SE USA, which would suggest they might have a much longer life.

If you decide to renew, check out www.marinaire.com
I recently installed one of their 16,000 BTU air conditioner / heat pump units in my salon and it works great. Cost was a little less than $2,300 US$.

I can vouch for that brand. Had one in my 28, another in the 32 and 3 of them in the Carver. They use Toshiba compressors which are said to be the best. Cannot even hear the compressor when it kicks in. Never had an issue on any of the units.

I'm thinking you might have the two piece units where the compressors are remote and the evaporators are in the living space, or do you have compact units?

Have you had anybody diagnose it yet? Could be something simple.
