396 2001 Carver Transom shower

Post by paulr »

Its no wonder why some very generous boaters started this Forum years ago due to many maintenance items that come up during the ownership of a Carver.
When winterizing my boat for the first time last year I pulled out the transom shower head and expected to turn it on and and flush it with the non toxic antifreeze from my water tank, nothing came out. During my one season of ownership I never used it.
Is there anyway to access the supply lines from behind without having to removing all the caulking from the valve enclosure on the outside of the transom?
Thank you anyone.

You may also check to make sure your shower hose that you pull out is not creased or bent and collapsed. I know if I pull mine out to far it will bend the hose so much that it will cut off any water from coming out of the shower head. Just a thought. I would turn on the shower without pulling the hose out and see if you have water coming out, if it does youll know.

Sometimes there may even be a shut off/isolation valve in that line between the pump and valve.
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

I had to replace my transom shower 2 years ago when we bought our 396 so I'm pretty familiar with what you're dealing with.

If you look inside the aft stateroom closet on the starboard side (see pic below) and look in the back of it you should find a panel that can be removed which will give you access to the hoses/connections. I have an old photo I took of the connections when I replaced mine - it's not great but I'll post it below too.

The shower faucet assembly was leaking on ours so I ended up replacing the faucet assembly and all fittings. I found one online that fit the plastic enclosure which was nice since I didn't have to enlarge/reconfigure the opening for the external enclosure.

If you have any questions just let me know! Good luck!!

Thanks very much KylerR. I wouldn't have thought of that one. Maybe because my wife has taken over the use of that closet. Now the season for me is pretty much over I'll get in there.
My fear last year was that I couldn't be sure it was properly winterized.
This year was rough for maintenance. Rebuilt both Vac pumps, replaced FWD air cond., and the ice maker.

I have seen that type of metric push to connect fittings on other places on the boat but I have never worked with them.
I have worked with other push to connect fittings before.
Is there any trick to get this type apart? They don't seem to have the part that you push in to release them.

They have a collar that you push against the fitting to release the tubing. Look first though as there may be a collet between the collar and the fitting to prevent accidental depression and let the tubing slide out under pressure. What works best for me is; turn water system off, relieve system pressure by opening a faucet, remove the locking collet by sliding it out if there's one there, push the tubing toward the fitting, push the collar against the fitting, pull out the tubing.

See pic below. Once you pop open that collar it looks like any other push fitting. As Viper mentioned, there may be a locking ring that needs to be slid out after removing the collar.

I didn't notice that little slot. Now it makes sense to me. That little cap hides the more common type "push to connect" locking clip that other fittings have. What ever brand these fittings are the only place I've seen them is on my boat.
Hopefully, the only thing I have to replace is the shower handle and hose but now I am prepared for everything.

Thank you.
