Adding Steps from Aft Deck to Swim Platform

Post by Paulisue »

Hi,

We have a 1988 Carver 4207. We want to replace the ladder from aft deck with steps. Any advice on companies that do this or DIY advice would be very appreciated. We are in the Alton, IL/St. Louis MO area. I attached a picture of an example of what we are looking for. Thanks,

That looks like my friend's boat. It's a 3207 and he built those steps and the platform box to the right. I think his build thread in on the site too. He also built that enlarged swim platform, as the stock one was too narrow to really accommodate the steps.

There are a couple threads on here that cover some spiral steps down to the platform that work on the 80's vintage aft cabins too.

There are generic marine spiral staircases now that are much easier and cheaper to get. Even then the platform may be too narrow, you'd have to ask for measurements from the stair provider so you can check if it would fit on your current platform.

These guys are in Canada but I'm sure there are suppliers in the US too. You may also check with companies that build swim platforms, some carry the stairs as well. Also look for marine stainless steel fabricators. Here is an example of the generic stairs... https://stainlessoutfitters.com/boat-st ... r-seniors/

Thanks. I'll do some more searching on here. We got a quote for a spiral stair, but am hoping for something that might be a little more dog-friendly.

I know this doesn't apply here, but one of our dock neighbours years ago had a German shepherd that could actually climb up the vertical steps to the fly bridge on his Ray, it was quite something.
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

I built a set of stairs for our 4207 out of aluminum square tubing and some 1/2” aluminum plate. Unfortunately I had a local fab shop manufacture the handrail for $3,200

I like the look, I think it's more modern looking then the spiral and may be an easier clime. And you don't need to change to a bigger swim platform. But it does take up more real-estate. Nice job.
