2000 374 carver gear oil

Post by 333 »

Carver model 374 with cummins 330 hp diesel engines. What oil is used in transmission gear box. It smells like engine oil differently not gear oil [ 80w90 ]. I have checked through manual that came with the boat but doesn't mention grade of just that it needs to be checked. I would be grateful if someone on here could answer this question. Thanks

If you put the make/model of the transmission in the thread you'll get better responses. The same unit was probably used on other models but unless a member has specific knowledge with your year/model/power_package you're probably not going to get good responses. Some do use regular engine oil and some use transmission fluid.

Could be straight SAE 30 but you need to confirm the manufacturer's recommendation. Knowing the make and model would help.

My advice , get the serial number and model number off the trans I.D. plate and e mail the manufacturer to ask what oil/fluid they installed from new around 2000. They are straight drives , correct?
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

I know there has been no response yet but felt to add some needed info for others maybe caught in the same issue.....I know it happened to me, caused a huge problem and expense.....

To add to the above.....it is important to use the correct compatible fluids in these applications. Over time builders change their specs and shaft seal etc materials which can be affected by different fluids. Some fluids have seal conditioners etc to help performance to stop leaks, perhaps a different viscosity etc.

That is the reason to get what the manufacturer of the unit recommends for those year builds.

I have the ZF 280A transmission and use Shell Rotella T1 30W, which was recommended by the guys at boatdiesel.com and sbmar.com.
