Generator operation
Curious to know if running the genny while at cruising speed is ok. We do not anchor out and would like to run the genny to keep it in running condition. If I run it at our dock location is it wise to unplug the shore power to put a load on the genny? Could I run it with the boat plugged in?
Thanks for your suggestions.

Re: Generator operation
Every time I leave the dock my genny is running - no issues running it at cruising speed. I can't see running it at the dock unless you don't use your boat. Also, no issues running with your shore power connected - the breaker panel will only allow EITHER the shore power or the genny to be the supply at any given time.

Re: Generator operation
Thanks for the quick replies. I think what you are saying is that if the shore power and genny are both on, the genny would override the shore power. Not a big deal to just shut down the shore power when generating power.
Thanks again.

Re: Generator operation
One doesn't override the other. It is manually controlled by the switch at your electrical panel. You can only have one at a time.

Re: Generator operation
If I recall, the Mariner generator control is a manual setup (I think) but there are some vessels that switch automatically. In such a case, when the generator is turned on, it energizes a main power relay that switches the source from shore to ship.

Re: Generator operation
I do not have any manual control for the genny, so I will continue to shut off the breaker to the shore power when running the genny.

Re: Generator operation
Is there not a gate that only allows operation of one supply at time? The toggle on the panel should be gated....

Re: Generator operation
Mine is set up i think as Lyndon has described. As soon as the genny starts it overrides the shore power. Lots of clicking of relays as it comes on line. After the genny is shut down the relays return to normal.
I have also run mine while underway..... no issue, just make sure you are outputting water from the genny exhaust and you are good to go.

Re: Generator operation
Must be as I described above with auto switching, that's why you hear the relay. Couldn't remember the Mariner set up.
