Screen Replacement

Post by tgebler »

I cannot figure out how to remove and replace the screen in two portholes on my 2000 396 aft cabin. I tried removing all of the screws on the frame shown in the attached photo but that was no help. Any suggestions?

Not sure I understand....the screen is designed to pop in and pop out - but only with the window open. With ours, we just un-dog the three retaining tabs on the window then open the window. Once the window is open, the screen will slip into the opening and is held in place with little tabs all around the edge of the screen. See the pics attached.

Does anyone leave their screens in all the time and close the port windows over them? I just noticed the previous owner had all the screens in place with the windows closed and latched…the rubber edges look a bit compressed. Is that normal or should I be looking for new screens?

Mine don't seem to want to close with the screens in place. Feels like I'm "forcing it" when I've tried to close them with the screens in. I wish they would as it is a bit of a hassle to put them in and out all the time!

I do not have the tabs. As you can see in the photo, there is a rubber gasket which I tried removing without success. Actually, when I met resistance, I stopped trying to remove it since I was afraid it would tear. Any suggestions to remove the screen since it is damaged?

Yup. That looks like mine. The screen is surrounded by that black rubber gasket and the entire screen/gasket are removable on mine. They were stuck in there pretty good from being squashed in for so long but definitely come out. I’ll try to remember to get you a pick this weekend.

We must have a different design on our 396. The screen has a note to remove screen before closing portlight.
