Ok, got my boat with drain plug removed and don't have one to put in it. What do I need to purchase? Looking from beneath looks like a keyed hole to me. Originally thought it would just be a 3/4" plug.

Any help or photos would be appreciated.

Sounds like you're describing the opening of a round thru-hull fitting that would have two slots opposite each other to assist in keeping it from turning during installation. It may not be your drain but an intake for something such as the head. If you are sure the drain is on the bottom of your hull rather than the transom, this type of plug is typically installed inside the boat. I'd take a really good look inside to ensure that it is actually a drain or has a hose hooked up to it. A picture would help. Perhaps another member can confirm drain location if there is indeed one for this model/vintage.

The older Carvers have a "t" handle plug that installs from inside the boat...not sure what size, but larger than a standard transom plug. Search "garboard drain plug" and you should find them

Some Silvertons use the same idea but with no handle, instead it's a plug with a square or hex configuration that requires an allen or square key.

If you can't find the T handle type, you can use a regular plug. If I recall, it's 3/4" NPT, some are 1" NPT.

T-handle starts to make more sense. I couldn't get myself upside down enough to even reach it from the inside and it looks about the same diameter as the T-handle.

I just ordered one, so we will soon see.

UPDATE
I got my T-handle, got upside down and found that the hole is a lot smaller than that!!

Looks like former owner must have lost the original drain plug, did not want to pay the $98 perko replacement price so inserted a reducer down to 3/8". Went to the ACE got a 3/8" brass plug from the plumbing isle and we have a dry boat. I don't like that the insert raised the drain out level by about 3/4" or so.
