Led replacements for G4 Halogens

Post by DanM »

I have tried a few offshore LED replacements for my 10W, side pin, G4 halogens on the interior of my boat. They were either too dim or too yellow (or both). I am looking for warm white replacements at a reasonable price since there are so many to replace.

Any user approved suggestions?

Thanks,
Dan

I replaced all of mine with these from Amazon. These are from Amazon Canada but I'm sure they have a similar product on the US site.

They are about the same as the halogens, possibly slightly brighter.

I don't really notice any difference other than its a touch brighter. They definitely aren't yellow though. It also looks a bit different because instead of just one bulb, you can see the 10 little LEDs. I will take that though over the awful heat those halogens give off.

I have Amazon Prime and ordered a 2 pack to try them before ordering another 10 to do the rest of the cabin. Amazon also has a great return policy.

I had the type shown above in my previous boat and they looked fine and gave as much or slightly more lumens compared to the Halogens. That being said i am looking for replacements for the Carver now and am tempted to try these. Rated @ 2700-3200K which is right about the same spectrum as a standard incandescent/halogen for color. Prices have come down considerably in the last 10 years. http://www.ebay.com/itm/191865544695?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT

Option #2 are these. http://www.ebay.com/itm/371586160904?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT

EDIT: Ended up buying these in Warm White/3w. They have the option of dimming which I may add in the future. 25 bulbs foe $38 delivered. Not bad at all. :pirate: http://www.ebay.com/itm/152037179716?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT

None of those g4 leds will look close to a halogen bulb. They emit a greenish yellow light which makes the wood in the boat look green. After trying many chinese ones like those I ended up using these and they look identical to the halogens without the current draw and heat but they are more expensive and a tiny bit brighter I thought. They are sold as a "halogen look alike". The fit is snug but it fits and makes the wood look nice again.

I'm glad you brought this up. I too have noticed a difference in the quality of light that you get with some of the cheaper off-shore product. You can't beat the price but I find you certainly get what you pay for in manufacturing quality, component quality, illumination quality, and longevity.
