If you look closely it does look like the finished end with a cotter key hole. Doesn't look stainless though... perhaps just dirty?

That would be a cool place to store a spare shaft and keep it protected. You wouldn't ever need to get to it unless you were hauling the boat anyways, so it would make sense to put it somewhere like that.

After thinking about the brass looking end with the small hole, threads as well.......if there is wiring attached on the inside, have a look at the name on it...perhaps a part of a cathodic system for corrosion control....oooo I love a good puzzle at this time of year......
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

I can't believe someone has not solved this yet. So, here is what I am going to do. By end of week, I will be talking with the guy that was in charge of Carver's technician group for almost 30 years. His name is Mike O., and he is in a lot of those brochure pictures on the website. If no concrete answers by then, I will bring this pic up for him. If he doesn't know, then we may never find the answer, but he certainly should know. Let the guessing begin, and it already has. 8-) er

OK. I think I know what it is, but waiting for confirmation tomorrow. I hope the suspense is not too much for everybody. Keep those guesses coming! When I first saw this, I thought it was a realygottapee dumaflagee. But no belt. :-O So, no. Then maybe a lightning dispersal rod. Not that either. Stay tuned, more to come. 8-) er

I think it's a hydraulic extendable tow bar. You flip a switch and it extends out and you screw a big hook to the end of it that you hook that on the eye of the dingy.

Maybe it's the boating version of the curb feelers on cars from the 70's.
Thank you for the help!

First of all, I don't know what it is. It looks like it is some sort of fitting like a pressure washer or hydraulic fitting. From the picture I cant see if it has the "quick connect" ribs on it. Can you look at the inside and see what runs to the fitting? Maybe it was a hydraulic connection for a davit lift?
