Blisters

Post by Kenny u »

Hi,
Just pulled my 1992 370 and fixed 20 blisters. Paint was good and cleaned monthly. Is this common for Carvers in this year or model? Could this be one of the bad resin batches I've heard about with other manufacturers? Maybe inferior gelcoat? Nasty water in the ICW around Savannah? Great boat otherwise.

Not a common occurrence with Carver but not unusual for all brands. Several variables/conditions contribute to the problem but nothing to do with gelcoat.

Warm water, boat is in all year, possible reasons......are you thinking of doing a barrier coat before it goes back in ?
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

If barrier coat means two coats of good bottom paint then yes.

No, a barrier coat is a totally different paint. You would have to strip off all the current bottom paint and then apply something like this:

Then after applying the barrier coat you would then apply your regular anti-fouling bottom paint.

Thanks Rick but no. Not going to the gelcoat. Just a good scuff and overpainting. Maybe I'll barrier coat next time it comes out. 24 months plus or minus a few months.
