Packing size for a 3807.

Post by VicB »

The shaft packing on my port engine is leaking. I loosened the jam nut and when I tried to tighten the packing gland, it only had two or three threads remaining. I am going to have to replace the packing. Does anybody know the packing size and how many rings are supposed to be in there? The shaft is 1-3/4”.
Thanks in advance, Vic

For anyone with a shaft that is 1-3/4", Carver said they were pretty sure that the packing size was 1/2"

Got this off the net. If yours conforms to standard size packing for the shaft size, the following should work:

1" shaft = 1/4" packing
1 1/8" shaft = 3/16" packing
1 1/4" shaft = 1/4" packing
1 3/8" shaft = 5/16" packing
1 1/2" shaft = 1/4" packing
1 3/4" shaft = 1/2" packing
2" shaft = 3/8" packing
2 1/4" shaft = 7/16" packing
2 1/2" shaft = 5/16" packing
3" shaft = 9/16" packing

Any decent marine store will have multiple sizes on the shelf. Buy 3 sizes, confirm the store will take back the ones you don't open, and get down in there. Packing is pretty cheap. If the store will only exchange unopened product, that's OK. You're always going to need something, and it's going to be more expensive than packing. 8-) er
