Falling mirror

Post by bandersen55 »

Attached is a picture of the mirror above the master bed. It's starting to come loose. I'm assuming it's glued to the ceiling. Can anyone verify that?

Can that wood trim piece that be pushed back up at the mirror seam? Could that be pushed back up and then some nice looking screws etc. from the side screwed into the wood used to support the mirror edges be better than relying solely on glue? Especially since it's over the bed.

Yes it can be pushed back up pretty easily. I thought about simply putting some screws in, but both pieces of wood are somewhat thin and I’m afraid it wouldn’t last long (and would look pretty bad after that). The boat is almost 20 years old now and if I could use the original construction technique and get it to last another 10 or 15 years I’d be pretty happy.

It looks like you could predrill some holes and use a screw with a chrome trim ring and if spaced properly would probably look fine.. then no one could tell it wasn't from carver like that.

It wouldn't surprise me if they used plastic push in panel clips/rivets. If they did, you may have to remove the assembly and replace the old clips with new ones. A lot of manufacturers use these for ceiling panels. The automotive industry uses them a lot too.
