2000 carver 406 AC thru-hull

Postby pondering50 » August 2nd, 2022, 1:52 pm

Hello,

Issue: AC thru-hull valve seemly only opens part way. Seems to shut off, just not open fully???. With both AC units on, one goes into high head pessure I think. Believe isue is not enough water flow to support both AC units.

Any options with handle (solid pulls does not budge it more than about 1/2 way to tab)

Can anything be done bottom side in the water? (help to open or validate amount of open)

To replace this thru-hull can it be done in the water or does it require haul out?

Any and all suggestions welcomed

Thanks
Mark

Have you tried exercising the valve back and forth to see if it frees it up. Not just a couple of times, try maybe a couple dozen times and do use some force, no cheater bar though. You do know a ball valve is also called a 1/4 turn valve because it only rotates 90 degrees from fully open to fully closed like this.

X2 on exercising the valves (all thru hulls) and if oem valve as my 405,,, when open the handle will be vertical or straight up and down and closed is horizontal.
It probably woud be pretty scary to try and replace while in the water, it could be done with some preparation but if your having a problem with it now there's no telling what might come up

Look on the opposite side of the handle to see if there's a plug there. If there is (it's a drain plug), then you can remove that and replace it with a grease fitting. You might to adapt the standard grease fitting to the right size threads. Then you can pump some teflon grease in there which will help lubricate the ball as you move the handle back and forth. Eventually it should go the full excursion.

Also, to verify that the HP fault is caused by low water flow, you could temporarily plug the water outlet of the OTHER A/C unit (when that unit is NOT running). That will increase the flow on the suspect unit and should prevent it from going into the HP fault. If that does not, then you might need to descale the heat exchanger on that unit. Even with the lower flow of the 'half-open valve', descaling it might resolve your issue.

Here is another angle......we used to have spiders that plugged up the ac discharge lines at the hull sides regularly. If you have separate discharges for each unit, maybe have a look at the discharges and make sure they are all clear.
The above is strictly my opinion.

Thanks everyone for input, suggestions, etc. Got it fully open, so the continued effort with a little leverage finally worked !!
Also after fully opened AC units, both worked fine.

Thanks everyone

Thanks for the feedback fix. Suggest you exercise the crap out of it to prevent eventual seizure.
