VDO Gauges

Postby tonyiiiafl » August 12th, 2022, 6:55 pm

Looking to replace my temp and oil pressure gauges. They are getting finicky, as to tape them and they move the needle. I have cleaned terminals already. I saw a direct replacement for the oil, but all the terms auger are different looking. Will I need new sender units with these?Original shown, then the replacements I saw. Temps are different.

Oil Pressure gauge I found. Seems like same as I have.

Did you end up replacing the gauges? Does everything work as expected after replacement?

I have a similar issue with the oil and temp gauges on the port engine.

Tony, while VDO applications usually utilize the European resistance standard, they do produce North American standard units as well so you'll have to confirm what you currently have and ensure the new ones match. The North American resistance standard is 33.5 to 240 ohms. Here is a link to Faria instructions for testing a North American standard unit, click on file # IS0345....Testing a Discrete Gauge and Sender
https://fariabeede.com/2-pages/troubleshooting_help.php
At the bottom you'll see what the resistance values should be for a given pressure, temp, and level readings. If you don't get those readings, you either have the European standard units or faulty senders. Check VDO's website, they may have a similar page.

If the readings go to normal after tapping the gauge then it's likely just a gauge issue. Internal connections can loosen and corrode.
