Quick Tip: Cleaning a Crusader 6.0 Heat Exchanger

Post by Delorean6855 »

In case this helps someone else...probably would work for other HE's I'm sure.
My port engine was running a little hotter (pushing 180 degrees) at 3000 RPMs. Starboard was solid at 170 and change. I had already cleaned the SB heat exchanger so decided to do the port.

You can see there are some blocked tubes at the bottom. I had already started working down from the top using 1/8" brass spindles to break through the crust in the tubes and followed up with a wire brush. Works great. I used a shop vac with a detail attachment to suck out the debris as I went along.

New end cap gaskets with aviation gasket seal after scraping the surfaces and was good to go.

After cleaning, temps solid.

Thanks for sharing!

A correct caliber gun cleaning kit also works great for cleaning tubes - and is a lot cheaper! :-D
