Gas tank replacement 1988’ 3807

Post by VicB »

So I am going to replace my port side gas saddle tank. My plan is to move the engine and transmission and set it over the stbd engine. It looks like the tank sits about 5 inches lower than the stringer in somewhat of a fiberglass pan. If I disconnect wiring and remove the wiring trough on the underside of the salon floor, above the tank, it might give a couple inches of clearance once the tank is lifted. Has anyone ever removed a tank without cutting it? That’s not an option with a gas tank. Just seeing if anyone has thoughts before I get started. I’m getting to the age where I’ve got to do more “thinking” than “snatching and jerking”

Is the tank on the trailer in the second pic the replacement tank? Is it to original OEM specs? Something doesn't look right but I'll check mine next time I'm at the boat.

Do you have a holding tank in front of the engine that will have to come out as well?

This is the new tank. It’s the exact OEM spec. I took a few measurements and when I contacted them, they already had every measurement on file. They sent me an exploded diagram and had me verify all measurements before they would fabricate it. According to the manufacturer of my starboard tank that was replaced in 2012, there were actually 2 different size tanks in Carvers run of 3807s. One was 72 inches long and one was 79 inches long. This one is 79. If I had it to do over, I think I would have had them make it a few inches shorter. It’s 5 inches below and behind a stringer. Not sure I have 5 inches of clearance on top to get the old one up, out and this new one back in. That’s going to add to the challenge. You are correct about the holding tank for the forward head. It’s right in front of the port engine. I took it out for repairs last winter. Both my holding tanks ended up almost failing due to corrosion. That’s what spurred me to want to replace the gas tank. It will have to come out again with the engine.
