Carver 396 Shifter/gear shift Question

Post by paulr »

Hello all,
I have a 2001 CY396 with stiff shifter/throttle controls. Are these supposed to be electrically assisted?

Unless there was an upgrade done by a previous owner, I doubt it. Most likely a shift cable issue unless it's set up too tight at the remote or the remote itself is worn.

Mine are not electrically assisted. Just cables directly from the helm to the engines/transmissions.

Problem solved, the cables in the engine room just needed a little oil and to be worked back and forth.
Thanks

The oil may just buy you some time in my experience. If they've been stiff for a while, chances are that the inner lining is worn somewhere like a turn/bend. Oil will help the cable move easier through there but it doesn't cure the underlying cause. Once there's slop in there because of the wear, it'll wear faster. Oil can be a pain after a few years so we used to pump regular engine coolant through cables. Worked great but again it didn't cure the cause. Can't be bothered doing that anymore, I replace the cables once and they won't come back to haunt me a couple of years later. FWIW, the stock cables typically used in most builds aren't the best, and the routing is just as or more important than cable quality.
