1995 Carver 454 Cam Needed

Post by Bvick1969 »

Looking for a new cam for the 454 Crusader cannot find one at parts store anywhere part number is RH RA 050015.

Can anyone guide me to a replacement? Located in Charleston Tennessee but will drive or pay for shipping.

Interesting, you'd think they'd be a dime a dozen for a 454. I can see it being a challenge if it's for a counter rotating engine though. Is it?

I wouldn't think a 1995 is counter rotation but it is certainly possible.
Maybe the problem is looking for a crusader part number? They may be discontinued.
I am not sure exactly how to direct you, but if you can verify it is a standard rotation engine, you should be able to use a mercruiser or a regular GM part number.
As viper mentioned, a cam should be pretty easy to find.

Good luck!

I've been on 1996 boats with CR engines so thought it worth mentioning. Not many out there in that vintage but there definitely are some so this needs to be considered. Really depends on how many of these the boat builder still had in stock after the end of the CR production. I know for sure they are in some Carver built boats after 1995.

I agree with you Tom, I think the issue here is that the OP is trying to find a "Crusader" part. It's a GM part and I'm pretty sure a good engine rebuilder, especially one that specializes in marine engines should be able to source a replacement. I say "marine" because they may already know the cross reference for the Crusader part number, be it a cross referenced GM number, Merc, Volvo, etc. Failing that, they should be able to match the cam based on the series/variation 454 in question. You should be able to get that info off of a Crusader dealer based on your serial number. A crusader dealer should also be able to supply you with a cross referenced cam IMO.

I know here in NY 454's are hard to come by do to Marine & Racing applications, Last I knew Jasper Engines (Which I wouldn't consider buying) was pay $ 1,600.00 for any good 454 block. My consern would be replacing only one engines cam with a new one and not the other motor too? Also looking at a crusader parts manual there is a LH cam and a RH Cam. Good luck my boating friend! I bought 1986 long blocks out of Boston back in 2013, goggle engines and rebuilders in Boston. :beergood:

If you can find the original specs for the cam, most cam companies like Bullet will grind you one.
Thanks

You can try Michigan Motorz in Michigan. They provide short and long block but would probably know (and might have) the cam you're looking for.

What's wrong with the cam you have now? For the most part they can be repaired. If the lobes are bad for example, they can be brought back to spec.

Maybe looking for a quick turn around to just buy used.....I would just check around local engine rebuilders etc. that deal with marine. Would be interesting to see if the marine cam specs were any different than the regular auto specs for that hp range though. Lots of cam grinders out there, they would have lots of specs.
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.
