NEXUS Card

Postby RGrew176 » June 2nd, 2017, 4:19 am

I applied for a NEXUS card on May 23rd. Does anyone here know how long the process usually takes? Just curious as my passport expires on August 16th and I am not planning to renew it.

Nexus is not a substitute for a passport, you still need a valid passport to travel. On top of that, you can only use Nexus at larger crossings as the smaller ones are not set up for this. FYI, Nexus is only accepted between Canada and the US. Any other place in the world you want to go, you might as well show them a baseball card as it has no validity except for maybe a form of photo ID.

Seems friends of mine got theirs done in less than two months. I've been wanting to get a NEXUS, but still haven't.

I would recommend renewing the passport though... they are the 'gold' standard for travel and much much easier to renew than re-apply.

Rick,
Have you considered a enhance Michigan drivers license? It allows travel to Canada. My wife has one and it works great.

I thought about it but from what I have been told by both the US and Canadian border patrol the NEXUS card is the best thing to have as a boater when boating between the two countries. It's also good when crossing the border on land via bridge or tunnel. It just makes it easier as a boater to travel between countries.

NEXUS is better to have, but harder to get.

The one downside with NEXUS is they become almost useless unless ALL the people on the boat have one. If they do, then you can call up to 4 hours prior to arriving and get cleared.

I believe your right Rick. I also think km1125 is right. Just one passager onboard without the card will require a physical customs appearance.

The main feature I want with the NEXUS card is that ability to call prior to departure letting them know where you are heading. It's supposed to make crossing back and forth a bit easier.

Your application for the NEXUS required either a passport or enhance driver license number. If you let the passport expire you must update your NEXUS record. You will need one of the two to keep your NEXUS valid. Rules for traveling to and from Canada require one of the two.

I guess I will have to renew my passport too.
