Kohler generator voltage drown when load applied

Post by dsolo »

10K Kohler genset drops volt when load applied. Voltage at 110 voltage, add load and RPMs drop along with voltage output. Looked at prior pozts, this seems to be a new problem for forum? Can't find any trouble shooting guide for this.

So at no load output is up to snuff. You apply a load and output voltage drops and rpms drop too. So ur governor is not compensating and upping the throttle. First I would make sure fuel filter was changed, air cleaner is clean and governor linkages are all free. Then there's an electric solenoid valve that may be bad or have a bad connection. May need to call the Kohler tech.

Whatever you do there don't play with or adjust the idle speed when no load, that is set for a certain rpm/cycles.....if that gets changed you will have to get it readjusted by someone with the right testers....like Mike said check the linkage for free movement....... :beergood:
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

All linkage is free on the stepper motor. I have a technician with me and we adjusted the voltage and hz to factory specs. Still not getting the speed control to the stepper motor? The control pcb may be suspect?

Applied 12 vdc directly to stepper motor. Motor good. The only input to the control pcb is the mag-pickup. Pulled the component and got an open circuit across connectors. Not sure what it should read. It appears the pickup is a magnet. The component may change it's state when the magnets from the magneto pass by the pickup? Any input would be appreciated. Will try to get input from Kohler.

This may be an engine runability issue. As mentioned above, check the simple things first as engine speed will affect output under load. Your governor may be working fine but the engine lacking the ability to achieve proper rpm for a given load. Could be as simple as fuel delivery or an ignition tuneup.

So a question, after you reset the idle speed to get 60 cycles, did you try to load it up a bit and if so did the governor arm try to open the throttle on the generator carb ? Is it 1800 rpm or 3600 rpm? ( curious).
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

Yes, tried the load and got no response from governor. Engine RPMs and voltage drop. If you manually adjust the troddle linkage the engine response is excellent. You can maintain the RPMs and voltage with the load. Engine is fine. Just not getting the voltage to the stepper motor that Controls the troddle.

The mag-pickup sensor is a normally open component so the open reading across the connectors is normal. There is a method to test it, it requires applying+12 vdc to it and putting a 10k ohm resistor in-line. You must pass a magnet across the sensor and measure the voltage drop across the resistor. I will check with the tech about testing it.

I am beginning to think the pcb assembly is suspect??

It is difficult getting help from Kohler. The marina is not a authorize dealer. The closest service is 100 miles away.

Will keep you updated.

Here's a place if you want to buy the service manual. I have the same 10e and purchased the manual a while back. The manual is c and e series but I can't really find what the difference to the e series is. Can't be much everything I've needed out of it has been spot on.

g36,

Is this manual different from the owner's manual? I do have it. I first thought the manual I have did not cover the 10e, someone corrected me stating there was no difference between the 10c and 10e. The manual I have is labeled 8c & 10c.
