Fuel consumption differential

Post by Crowbar »

1987 28 ft Voyager. Twin 230 hp gas. 1580 hrs. My port engine burns between 1/2 and 3/4 gal./hr more than stb. engine. Is this excessive or sort of normal?

I have same boat and power. Both engines burn about the same. There's a lot of things that could cause this. Props could be a little different or slightly damaged, dirty flame arrestors, tune up needed,to name a few.

Check your chokes and make sure they are completely opening when the engine is warm. I had the choke thermostat go bad on my stbd engine and it would stay 1/2 way closed when the engine was warm. Still ran good, but used noticeably more fuel.

Could I ask, how are you measuring this fuel use ?
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

Thanks for the tips. I'm measuring when I fill the tanks. Typically, the stb will take 30 gal and the port will take 38-40gal

Check your propeller shaft drag. Do both propeller shafts have the same resistance when you manually turn them by hand (transmissions in neutral)?

if they are both tuned well, and your running gear is in good shape, it could be as simple as a sync problem. You would be surprised wahy a couple hundred RPM's will do.
If you don't have a sync, try pushing the starboard up a couple hundred rpm as read on the tach and see if it balances out.
