Is there really a difference between anchors?

Postby amanphoto » March 18th, 2019, 1:24 pm

I'm looking to upgrade my anchor from a delta plow to a newer designed anchor.

I was looking at the Rocna and the Mantus. They look the same, except that the Mantus is bolted together and the Rocna is welded. Is there really a difference?

There is a huge difference however both of the ones you are looking at are among the best and compare well to each other. Delta plow is decent IMHO having owned a few of those but no competition for the Rocna or Mantus. A good upgrade in your case.

I upgraded my anchor last season and I researched 'ad infinitum' before I purchased. I decided to go with a Mantus 45 pounder. Grabs quick and holds great. The company is terrific. Also take a look at some of their other products several of which I believe are quite innovative.

When you are in that range of anchors, both stand side by side. I've heard the Mantis has an edge on the Rocna. But that being said, both are great!

One main difference is that the Mantus anchor has about 50% of the anchor's weight at the tip. This will help initiate setting quicker than most others.
But check out this video SV Panope. The guy tests many popular anchors and has video footage of each anchor setting and and then resetting. At the end of the study he then sums up the pros and cons of each style. It's very informative and entertaining.

Interesting to say the least. Thanks for posting. Confirms my findings that a Mantus is really a great anchor with the best and quickest set of them all.

Yea Hans, we are both on the same page.
His main objection to the Mantus is the shank, which he believes is not thick enough and would have a propensity to bend. So I contacted Mantus and inquired about the
number of shank failures they have experienced and the number is WAY low. I dont recall the specifics but the failures were insignificant. In any event, they are guaranteed for life and they would send out a replacement shank.
My concern was the integrity of the bolts. I spoke to them about that and they have never had a bolt fail. They also suggested that most of their anchors are used as primary anchors and live on the bow fully assembled.

I would not worry the least about the bolts. The shank will bend and the anchor chain will break before you shear off those 4 bolts. ;-)
