Re: Urgent and I need help
And is it specific type to these shafts? I have a mechanic that will be doing this for me. Thanks Viper

Any good marine parts retailer and marina should carry it. There are a few different types but you will need to know the size that your logs take. Exactly what is the diameter of your shafts, 1-3/4"?

Yes sir I would agree completely. I really believe the boat would have been on the bottom in the morning had I not stopped by to check on it.
My biggest fear in purchasing a boat was it sinking so I replaced everything with better than factory regarding this issue. Live and learn brother and your knowledge means so much. Amazing what I have learned from ya in 9 short months.

Re: Urgent and I need help
Here are standard packing sizes for shaft diameters but your tech can check what you have to make sure. This can be done in the water.
1" shaft = 1/4" packing
1 1/8" shaft = 3/16" packing
1 1/4" shaft = 1/4" packing
1 3/8" shaft = 5/16" packing
1 1/2" shaft = 1/4" packing
1 3/4" shaft = 1/2" packing
2" shaft = 3/8" packing
2 1/4" shaft = 7/16" packing
2 1/2" shaft = 5/16" packing
3" shaft = 9/16" packing
1" shaft = 1/4" packing
1 1/8" shaft = 3/16" packing
1 1/4" shaft = 1/4" packing
1 3/8" shaft = 5/16" packing
1 1/2" shaft = 1/4" packing
1 3/4" shaft = 1/2" packing
2" shaft = 3/8" packing
2 1/4" shaft = 7/16" packing
2 1/2" shaft = 5/16" packing
3" shaft = 9/16" packing

Re: Urgent and I need help
"Better" than factory is not always best, as you have discovered. Thankfully you caught the issue before major damage.
I believe you have 1-3/8" shafts but confirm before buying. As Viper mentioned, you can most likely tighten the packing a bit and be ok. Just get those pumps running.
If needed, you could grab an in line 10 -15 amp automotive fuse and holder, and run a wire of at least 14 AWG from the battery to the forward pump switch to give you a little piece of mind until you get it fixed properly.

Glad to see this was caught in time and will be fixed once and for all. Like I have always said, professionals are not always easy to find and when you do find one hang on to him. This brings up a really good example of why you may want to monitor your boat remotely. See my post about this here. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3863&p=27916#p27916

Re: Urgent and I need help
According to the parts manual, the shaft size for a 98 405 gas is 1 1/2"...
Did you ever repair the generator thru hull you said was leaking ?....., seems like a lot of water for a dripping packing gland.

FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

Re: Urgent and I need help
Serendipity - did you just launch the boat yesterday? That leakage is excessive, but it may slow down by itself as the glands expand providing a better seal. I have a similar issue each time I launch, but then they seal up in a short time. It is really strange your mechanic would not be aware of possible mismatch like that. It will all work out! Good luck.
Viper - great job being Johnny on the spot! Really comforting to know for all of us.
