50 amp power y spec

I am currently away from my 396, but looking to come up with a solution for shore power.

Currently, I have a 50 amp (male) to two 50 amp y that allows to plug both 50 amp power cables coming from the boat into one connector ashore.

What I am looking to do is use one cord, with the y at the boat (female) end.

My question is this, what is the spec for the boat receivers, 50 amp 125v or 50 amp 125/240v

If it was an older model Carver like the '88 we used to have, I would say probably a 125. I would hope newer models like a 396 would be a 125/240 since marinas offering 50a/125 are few and very far between. 30-40 years ago, 50-125 was more prevalent.

is the boat wired for 50 amp 125 service at the shore inlet at the boat?. 50amps each ac cord. what you are using with your y at the shore connection box i s a 50amp 250v which splits it to 2 50 amp 125v female plugs. this setup allows 50 amps on each cord, if like my 405 your hvac units are all on panel 2 and on panel 1 you have the rest of the boat. theres no way to run the boat with one 50 amp 125 shore cord unless you really limit what you are wanting to run. if you are wanting to only use one cord then i would invest in basically a long shore cord with 4 conductors 6awg and wire it with 50 amp 250 plugs one male and one female ends which match up to your y and then use your splitter at the boat ac inlet , but this is going to be very expensive. imo. not any advantage and coiling that up is going to be a pain also.

I must assume you have dual 125v 50a inlets which are difficult to find and basically obsolete unless your marina has not upgraded in quite some time. Point is any new installation or upgrades at marinas will not have the old style 125v 50a pedestal plug available. That being said, your best bet is to replace one of your inlets with a 125/250v 50a inlet and wire each hot to panel 1 and 2. The other inlet would be disconnected or converted to a cable inlet or whatever you choose. This is basically the same configuration as you have now except you now have a standard power plug and 100A available through a single cord connected to the dock pedestal.

I have the same setup on my boat with two 50A 125V inlets on the boat side. I was able to find a Y with the two 50A on boat side to a 50 A female and then run one 50A cord out to the pedestal which then has a 50A to 30A adapter.

I do need to budget my amps but not a big deal. I just turn off the air while using any other high draw appliances such as coffee makers, etc

I’m doing the same as what g36 described. I have two 50amp 125 volt connectors on the boat and use a “Y” with two 50 amp 125 volt outlets to a 50 amp 125/250 volt inlet. I then use a single 50 amp 125/150 volt cable to The pedestal.

imo a 50 ft 4 wire shore cord will start at about $400.00 in addtion to midnightsun suggestion of replacing a shore inlet. and for darrenlife's' suggestion,, it would be a pain in the butt for me to keep reminding my wife to turn stuff off and on to keep from tripping the circuit breaker. 50amp 125v are old but not obsolete in usa in the south where we boat, yes they are less options with it.
really just depends on how much money you want to spend or how big of pain coiling the cord up is i guess. if you want to change imo . the single cord since you already have a y

Hans, I think g36 was referring to darrinlife’s set up as he connects his 50 amp cord to a 30 amp adapter at the pedestal. At first I had the same thought as you until after I reread it a couple of times.

What power is available from the one plug at the dock/shore pedestal..? This will affect what you can do properly.
