Hi All!
We just purchased a 2002 Carver 396. Above all, we wanted a covered slip. The only available covered slip right now has 30amp service. What can we run on 30 amp shore power? More importantly, what can’t we run on only 30 amp?

Congrats and welcome aboard.
You can run a fair bit on 30 amps but not all at once, power management is key. Not ideal but it's doable if a covered slip is important. You just can't run a few high load items at the same time. Try a combination of items and keep an eye on your amp meter to see what you can run comfortably while keeping it under 30 amps. If you have your hot water heater on for example, don't operate the microwave and all of the AC units at the same time.

Re: New Carver Owner
My 3867 Santego has a factory 100A (2@50A) original power requirement. I never see a draw like that even when using the oven. Although the elderly dual AC units take up one side of that and the oven, fridge, microwave, water heater and ice maker suck up at least 30A.
Can't the marina accommodate you? Tell them what you need and see if they can. I told my harbourmaster what I was looking for and he put me in a slip to suit.
Out of curiosity - why the covered slip?

Re: New Carver Owner
Welcome! Should be very manageable to stay within 30 Amps. One thing to check is if the refrigerator / AC units are original. If any of them were replaced in the last 5 years, they are much more efficient, drawing minimal power compared to original tired units. Happy cruising!

Re: New Carver Owner
What connections do you have going into the boat? dual 50A? Dual 30A? Single 50A?
When you say you have only 30A available at the slip, do you have only one outlet or 2 you can use?
