Hello. No boat yet

Post by Dad Joke »

As noted, I have not bought a Carver yet, but am zeroing-in on a 1984 aft cabin. It has been out of use for some time and needs a lot of mechanical work, it is complete and unmodified from the way Carver built it.

My sailboat go on the market in a few weeks. I had an epiphany over a year ago and realized that a cruiser is far better suited for my family than a sailboat.

BTW, I'm considering naming our next boat "Dad Joke". My daughter is not amused. :-D

Welcome aboard!!

Which model are you looking at? Unless your kids are all old enough to be "deck hands", you keep them active on lines, a power boat is probably a much better option. Probably a lot easier on the whole family for overnighting on too.

Post up some pics when you get a chance!! Love to see 'before' and 'after' pics on projects too!!

Welcome to the group! I sailed before changing to power also. Power is absolutely the way to go. So much easier, lot less yelling. Good luck on the aft cabin. Hope you are mechanically handy and can bend like a contortionist. Can be a lot of fun. 8-) er

Ok, so you are looking at an aft cabin Carver. Please let us know what model as I'm sure folks with the same will chime in with advice.
Make sure you get a full pre-purchase survey and a sea trial would be great, but if it has been out of service for sometime, there's a good chance you will have fuel issues. Old gas, old ethanol gas that has been phase separated, water in the tanks, etc. Depending on the age of the gas there's a good possibility that all that old gas will need to be pumped out and disposed of.

Welcome Aboard and welcome over to the dark side. I've never owned a sailboat but have sailed with friends. I much prefer power over sail but both have their advantages and disadvantages. Good luck with yours.

Welcome aboard. We have a 2000 396 Aft Cabin which is very roomy inside. The only drawback is not having a helm with true weather protection. We have Isenglass but no wipers of course so no fun operating in the rain.

Good luck with your search.
