Anchor Light

Postby denpooch » August 13th, 2022, 3:11 pm

Hey there everyone.
I was on the 'hook' and when I turned on the anchor light I did not get 360 white but just 180 aft light. When I switch to running, aft white stays and forward red/green power on.
Do you know if there are 2 bulbs in the mast?
I don't know if its a switch or bulb issue.
It will be good info to have prior to breaking out a ladder to get up there .
Also, are you guys replacing these bulbs with LED or keeping the original incandescent.
My vessel is a 2005 Mariner..
Thanks.

Yes, there are two bulbs in those kind of combination lights.

You can typically replace with an LED, but you need a good quality LED, not just a cheap replacement. Cheap replacements might work but they expect a constant voltage and don't tolerate surges that great. Good quality bulbs will work the same over a wider voltage range and are preferred over the cheap ones especially for something as important as a navigation light.

Replacing both bulbs with LEDs would be desirable in an anchor light situation as they draw MUCH less power from the battery when on the hook.

If you decide to change to led, a good idea IMO , check the CG regs in your area as the anchor light may need to be visible for a required distance.....some of the bulbs may have ratings, IDK for sure. Doesn't hurt to be in the know..
The above is strictly my opinion.

Chances are good that any LED equivalent will be at least as bright and probably brighter than the incandescent it replaces. And yes, I would replace any bulbs you have to LED, not just running lights, but interior lights as well.
