Is there really a difference between anchors?

Interesting,good video........ wonder if the plow that we have installed from the factory is the same overall type as the spade he seemed to like so much.....also seemed like most the anchors worked ok when they had the right scope, now maybe I missed something.

Anyone know how the Mantus fits on the Carver bow roller on the Mariner ?

My anchor is factory, shiny polished stainless and fancy. It works but is no Mantus. I think it is basically a copy or made by Delta but could be wrong. The Mantus does not fit my bow roller well at all, tried a 35lb last year and even that did not work. Would need to change the bow roller setup which will eventually happen if I can manage to depart with my 50lb bling bling wonder. Not that it works the best but dam it looks good

Hey Bud. I think a plow and spade function a little differently, The spade may do a better job at burying itself as a 'new generation' design, but I may be wrong about that.
As far as fit on a mariner. On the Mantus website you can print out a template and mount it on foam board, which helped me decide on the size I chose. The anchor works well with the bow roller, however, I added the optional 'anchormate' which holds the anchor firmly in place when at home. I did have to make one modification to use the mate. I needed to add a longer bolt to go through the roller and the bolt had to move freely within a stainless steel tube, which allowed me to fully tighten the mate while allowing the roller to move easily.

How close the the nose did the point of the anchor come? I’m worried about them bumping when stowed.

What size anchor did you go with?

I went with a 45 lb. I would feel comfortable in winds up to about 45 knots. Mantus states their sizing is conservative.

I have a Delta Plow on my Carver. It has been a great anchor so far. Have pretty much used Danforth styled anchors before. While I had no issues with that style too I think the plow is a better anchor. Mine has not failed to grab yet on the first try. Are other styles better? Perhaps but I am very satisfied with my plow.

There are a lot of anchors that look the same. It all depends on bottom structure and conditions.

I’m not saying that plows don’t work. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t be on so many boats. If I’m going to replace my anchor, I’m going to replace it with something that works better.

Currently I have a 22 lb plow style with 120’ of chain. Hit holds. But I don’t trust it. It’s undersized for the size of the boat (Mariner 350).

As a side note, My previous boat (25’ Monterey) had a 13 lb fortress style anchor on it. It was able to hold that boat and a 40’ Sulverton with minimum drag during a raft up. That anchor was a little finicky to set and always came up dirty. The plow anchor always comes up clean.

Interesting video. Reminds me of my first experiences with a danforth. That darn thing would get so fouled with weeds it would hardly ever get an initial bite. Wondering if a sheet of replaceable teflon embedded in the typical fouling area would eliminate the clay/mud/seabed fouling causing the anchor to not reset after initial set. Maybe a new use for the Pam can?
